Need Help?

When you start to look at CCTV, it can be a daunting excercise with so many options available in todays market, please see some basic questions below to help you decide what you require;

Q: Do you need to just view the camera locations or do you also need to record the images ?
A: You can purchase very affordable systems that will just show you the camera locations without recording, some will even give an audible alarm back at the monitor to warn you to the presence of a visitor or intruder, if you need to also record the images you will need to look at DVR systems.

Q: How many locations do you need to monitor ?
A: Once you know how many cameras you require, you can look for a system with at least this number of camera outputs, it is sometimes worthwhile to purchase a system that can be added to in the future should you need to monitor a new location.

Q: Are the cameras going to be inside, outside or both ?
A: Ensure the cameras you purchase are designed to work outside if your monitoring locations are external.

Q: Do you require the cameras to have night vision ?
A: Most but not all cameras have night vision, check that they have this function if it is required, also cameras will have different distances that they will work at night, ensure that the cameras will cover your application.

Q: Are the CCTV cameras powered by the monitor or do they require a 240v power supply ?
A: Some systems will use the cables going from the monitor to the camera for the power supply, these are by far the easiest and quickest systems to install, but the more expensive and powerfull cameras will need their own power supply that would be in the form of a AC to DC transformer plugged or wired into a 240 v AC power supply.

Q: What size lens do we need on our CCTV camera ?
A: Most CCTV Cameras have a set built in lens, in general they will vary from 3.6mm to 12mm but you can purchase Cameras that can be adjusted between a set range.
As a general rule please see the list below to help you understand which lens will suit your application:
1) 3.6mm Lens at 5 metres distance would cover the width of 3 vehicles, at 10 metres a width of 6 vehicles, at 20 metres a width of 9 vehicles.
2) 6mm Lens, at 5 metres distance would cover the width of 2 vehicles, at 10 metres a width of 3 vehicles, at 20 metres a width of 6 vehicles.
3) 8mm Lens: at 5 metres distance would cover the width of 1 vehicle, at 10 metres a width of 2 vehicles, at 20 metres a width of 4 vehicles.
4) 12mm Lens: at 5 metres distance would cover the width of half a vehicle (very clear number plate), at 10 metres a width of 1 vehicle, at 20 metres a width of 3 vehicles.

Obviously the wider the picture is, the more ground is covered with one single camera, but less detail (such as number plates) will be pictured.

Q: If you intend to record the images, what size hard drive will you require ?
A: The answer to this is not easy as it will depend on how many cameras you have working with your system, what quality footage you have set the system to record on etc etc, but the simplest solution would be to say ' what is the maximum length of time that the premises is unmanned, at most it would normally be two weeks for a business over a long Christmas or perhaps three weeks for a domestic holiday of a lifetime', therefore provided the system will record and keep the data without being over written for this time, this is all you will require.
Most four camera systems will cover 4 weeks using a 250G hard drive as a very basic rule.

Q: Wired or Wireless ?
A: We would say that if you can run cables to the camera locations then this should be the chosen method, you can use wireless for small business and standard home applications but the pictures are not the same quality. You can use a combination of wired and wireless for hard locations, these are in the form of a wireless link between two location whilst still using cables going to and from the wireless location, a typical appliction would be to run a cable to the end of a building from the DVR, then jump a wireless signal from the end of this building to another building which has a wireless receiver at the closest location available, then a cable will go from this receiver to the camera, this gives you the best of both worlds.

Q: Can the footage be used in court ?
A: This is a very grey area, it is very easy for someone to say that the image is not them, especially if they have a hood partially covering their face, all we would state is that it may help in certain court cases, but it can only help you and the police when we are all trying to prevent, reduce or solve crime.

There is an endless choice of systems on the market these days, some suitable for DIY some not, affordable & expensive, technical & basic, monitored or not, if you are confused please contact us for friendly, no obligation advice !!
