StoppaRed FAQ
Q: Is it Legal ?
A: Yes, the Mace UV Defence Spray is legal in the UK. Section 5(1) (b) of the Firearms Act 1968 prohibits any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing. Because the Mace Defence Spray doesnt contain any substances a court in this country may consider noxious and the can itself is not designed to discharge a noxious substance, it is not prohibited by section 5(1) (b) and does not come under the control of the firearms legislation.
Q: On how many perpetrators can I use Spray?
It is possible to use the Mace UV Defence Spray on more than one person. However we advise that it be used on one person only (if possible) for the full effect and maximum time to escape and seek safety. Stop spraying when you are sure that the whole face is covered in goo, then get away as fast as you can to a place of safety and call the Police.
Q: Can I use this Defence Spray several times?
In theory yes, but we do not advise it. This Defence Spray can contains fluid which you cannot measure from the outside. So when you think that the spray is half full it may not be enough. Do not play with your life.
Q: Is the Mace UV Defence Spray hazardous for my health?
No, all the ingredients used in the Defence Spray come from the food and cosmetics industries and are non toxic. The ingredients are tested extensively by these producers. They are not harmful for the eyes and skin. When swallowed it is wise to go for first aid as a precaution. Small amounts will cause no harm
Q: Does the Mace UV Defence Spray really give me a chance?
Yes, the sticky, slimy goo gets in an attackers eyes. When a person gets something in their eyes they will automatically close their eyes and attempt to wipe it away with their hands until they are sure that all the goo is gone. Compare it with a shampoo, it doesnt hurt but you will close your eyes until youve rinsed it out with water. This short amount of time is long enough to get away and call for help. Also, carryingthe Defence Spray with you will help keep you alert to your surroundings and prepared for an attack giving you an improved chance of getting away.
Q: Once sprayed, can the Police find the attacker more easily?
Yes, normally a potential attacker doesnt look like a movie villain with scars and dark clothes they look like ordinary people. However after being sprayed with Mace UV Defence Spray, they will have a bright red face, neck and hands & hair. This will draw attention to themselves and will make it easier for the Police to identify and apprehend them. Another benefit is that once sprayed, attackers inadvertently leave bright red fingerprints behind that will help identification and prosecution and don't forget, it also contains an invisible UV trace on them too!
Q: Can I take the Defence Spray everywhere I go?
Yes, but consider that there might be house rules that say that Defence Sprays like this should be left at the entrance. For instance at clubs, nightclubs, football matches or even cinemas and airports, you must respect these rules.
Q: When may I use it?
When you are in direct danger of physical harm and there is no other way to get out of danger. This must be in accordance with local laws.
Q: Can I spray somebody just for fun?
No, if the person you have sprayed files a report with the Police you could be punished. Only use this Defence Spray as it is designed, for use in self-defence.
Q: Does it destroy clothing?
No, it washes out of most clothing eventually.
It is not tested on all fabrics so be careful.
Q: Can I use the spray over a great distance?
You can spray somebody accurately over 3 meters (nearly 10 feet).

DYE IN SPRAY LEADS POLICE TO ATTACKERS Date : 30.01.07
Crime victims can help police track offenders with a red dye spray that leaves a semi-permanent mark on clothing and skin.
Even when a suspect squirted with Stoppa Red has washed it off, police can still link them to the scene of a crime by using UV to show up the spray.
Developers of the £19 product, demonstrated it in Sneinton, scene of a recent spate of sex attacks.
Stoppa Ltd, worked with Mace Security International, a world leader in self-defence
devices, to design it.
Stoppa director, Matthew Wilkinson, said: "The spray is more effective than an attack alarm
because it gives police a chance to catch a person after they've attacked."
He said the spray was something that everybody could carry that "would not land them in
loads of trouble".
The spray, which contains concentrated food dye, does not disable an attacker which means
there are no legal restrictions such as with CS gas or pepper spray.
It is hoped the element of surprise and fear of getting caught would be enough to scare off
an attacker.
Sneinton beat manager, Mat Mitchell, said: "The detection element is something we have
found very interesting." Identification and arrest can be made without the need for checking
CCTV and collecting witness statements, he said.
Stoppa has sold approximately 100 sprays in Nottingham and has sold successfully through mail order across the country and abroad.
The spray was demonstrated at a recent community safety meeting at the Greenway
Centre, in Trent Lane, Sneinton. Police and lawyers have indicated that using it would not
normally leave an attack victim at risk of charges from their attacker.
But a police spokesperson warned: "Anyone who carries one of these items must bear in
mind the use of reasonable force and if it was used in a malicious way, the person would
have no legal protection."

Legal Information
As for the legality of the sprays I would like to reassure you that the simple ownership or possession of our the StoppaRed self defence sprays does not appear to break anylaws in the UK at this time.
There are three different Acts of Parliament that would control our product if it were indeed illegal.
Section 1 Prevention of Crime Act 1953
Makes it offence to have a weapon designed to cause injury in a public place without lawful authority or areasonable excuse.
StoppaRed UV does not fall within the definition of a weapon because it is not designed orintended to cause 'injury'.
Section 5 (1) (b) Firearms Act 1968
Makes it an offence to own any weapon that discharges anynoxious gas, liquid or other thing.
If StoppaRed sprays were indeed Sec 5 Firearms, we would not be able to import them or sell them without a licence. Our products do not contain any noxious substances.
Section 3 Criminal Damage Act 1971
Makes an offence of possessing something with the intention ofcausing criminal damage, howeverSection 5 (2)of the Act says:
(2) A person charged with an offence to which this section applies shall, whether or not he would be treated for the purposes of this Act as having a lawful excuse apart from this subsection, be treated forthose purposes as having a lawful excuse--
(b) if he destroyed or damaged or threatened to destroy or damage the property in question or, in the STOPPARED PRODUCTS AND THE LAW case of a charge of an offence undersection 3 above, intended to use orcause or permit the use ofsomething to destroy or damage it,in order to protect property belonging to himself or another or a right orinterest in property which was orwhich he believed to be vested in himself or another, and at
the time of the act or acts alleged toconstitute the offence he believed--
(i) that the property, right or interest was in immediate need of protection;
and
(ii) that the means of protectionadopted or proposed to be adoptedwere or would bereasonable
having regard to all the circumstances.
Which means that you areallowed to have in your possessionStoppaRed UV if you intend to stainan attackers clothing in order to protect your property (which according
to the Criminal Damage Act includesmoney) as long as it is reasonable tothink that by spraying a mugger etc you stand a chance of stopping him, because damaging a muggers clothing
is not 'criminal' damage.
If someone used the spray to damage clothing just out of spite they would quite rightly have committedan offence under the Criminal Damage Act 1971 and it would be thought of as 'criminal'.
Furthermore you have at commonlaw a duty to up hold the Queens Peace and to assist in the appre-hension of offenders.
The Law Allows you to help to catch criminals, to prevent crime and to protect yourself.
The Criminal Law Act 1967 (-)states that 3:--
(1) A person may use such force as is reasonable in the circumstances in the prevention of crime, or ineffecting or assisting in the lawful arrest of offenders or suspected offenders or of persons unlawfully at large.
The use of a Marker Spray can certainly assist in the lawful arrest ofoffenders as it makes their identi- fication much more likely. You are also using much less force to stain amugger and call the Police who canthen do an area search for him than it is to physically restrain him andmake a Citizen's Arrest.
Each canister is clearly marked witha description of the product and ourdisclaimer stating that the ingredients are inert and not subjectto the Firearms Act.
The products have been used numerous times here in the UK and in every case the Police have been satisfied that the product is legal.
